What is ISEER Rating and Why It Matters When Buying an AC

June 17, 2026· 5 min read

If you have recently gone shopping for a split AC in Mumbai, you may have noticed a number on the BEE star label alongside the familiar star rating — ISEER. Many buyers glance past it without understanding what it means. But if you run your AC for eight to ten hours a day through Mumbai's long summer, this single number can make a significant difference to your annual electricity bill.

What Does ISEER Stand For?

ISEER stands for Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It was introduced by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in 2018 to replace the older EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) system for split ACs. While EER was calculated at a single fixed temperature, ISEER measures efficiency across a range of temperatures that reflect actual Indian seasonal conditions — making it a far more realistic measure of how your AC will perform in real-world use.

The formula is straightforward: ISEER = total cooling output over the season ÷ total energy consumed over the season. A higher ISEER value means the AC delivers more cooling for every unit of electricity it consumes.

How ISEER Relates to the BEE Star Rating

The BEE star rating (1 to 5 stars) for split ACs is directly based on the ISEER value. Higher ISEER ranges earn more stars. The BEE periodically revises these ranges upward, which is why a 5-star AC from 2022 may have a lower ISEER than a 5-star AC from 2026 — the standards keep improving as technology advances.

Approximate ISEER ranges for split ACs in 2026:

  • 1 Star: ISEER 3.30 – 3.49
  • 2 Star: ISEER 3.50 – 3.99
  • 3 Star: ISEER 4.00 – 4.49
  • 4 Star: ISEER 4.50 – 4.99
  • 5 Star: ISEER 5.00 and above

The higher the ISEER, the less electricity your AC consumes for the same cooling output — translating directly into lower electricity bills month after month.

Why ISEER Matters Specifically in Mumbai

Mumbai's climate is unlike that of any other Indian metro. The city experiences high temperatures from March through June, followed by a humid monsoon from July to September, and a warm October-November tail end. Unlike Delhi, where winters are cold and ACs get a long break, Mumbai residents often run their ACs for eight to ten months of the year.

This extended usage makes ISEER critically important:

  • A 5-star ISEER 5.0 AC uses roughly 30–40% less electricity than a 2-star ISEER 3.5 model of the same tonnage
  • On a 1.5-ton AC running 10 hours daily in Mumbai, that can translate to savings of ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 per year on electricity bills
  • Over a 10-year lifespan, the energy savings can easily exceed the price difference between a 3-star and 5-star model
  • Mumbai's ambient outdoor temperature stays high even at night, which means your inverter AC's compressor rarely idles — making efficiency ratings especially relevant here

ISEER vs COP — What Is the Difference?

You may also encounter COP (Coefficient of Performance) on some product spec sheets. COP is measured at a single standard temperature and is more commonly referenced for fixed-speed ACs. ISEER, on the other hand, accounts for variable load conditions across different times of the day and across seasons — making it the more meaningful figure for inverter ACs, which modulate their compressor speed continuously based on room temperature and outdoor conditions.

For modern inverter split ACs, always prioritise the ISEER value. For older fixed-speed models, EER or COP may still appear on the label as the primary efficiency indicator.

How to Use ISEER When Comparing ACs

When comparing two ACs of the same tonnage at similar price points, ISEER gives you a clear, objective efficiency benchmark to work with:

  • Always compare ISEER values from the physical BEE label, not from marketing brochures alone
  • A higher ISEER model priced ₹3,000–₹5,000 more than a lower ISEER alternative will typically recover that cost in 12–18 months of Mumbai usage
  • Look for the BEE star label on the outdoor unit at the time of delivery to verify the rating matches what was advertised
  • Opt for at least 3-star (ISEER 4.0+) for a bedroom; choose 5-star if the AC will run all day in a living room, shop, or office
  • Inverter ACs always have a higher ISEER than non-inverter models of the same star rating — inverter technology is essential for long-run-hour environments like Mumbai

ISEER for Window ACs and Other Appliances

ISEER currently applies specifically to split ACs. Window ACs and portable ACs use EER as their primary efficiency rating. Refrigerators, washing machines, and other home appliances have their own BEE star rating systems based on annual energy consumption — the principle of higher stars meaning better efficiency is the same, but the calculation methodology differs by product category.
