How to Clean Your AC Filter at Home — Step-by-Step Guide for Mumbai

June 12, 2026· 4 min read

Why Cleaning Your AC Filter Matters — Especially in Mumbai

Mumbai's combination of high humidity, construction dust, vehicular pollution, and coastal salt air creates one of the most demanding environments for air conditioners in India. Your AC's filter bears the brunt of this — trapping dust, allergens, and pollutants to keep the air in your home clean and the unit running efficiently. When that filter gets clogged, the consequences are immediate and costly: weaker cooling, higher electricity bills, more frequent breakdowns, and poor air quality inside your home. The good news is that cleaning your AC filter is a simple 15-minute task you can do at home — no technician required.

How Often Should You Clean Your AC Filter in Mumbai?

The general recommendation for most Indian cities is every 4–6 weeks during heavy usage. In Mumbai, we recommend a more frequent schedule:

  • Every 2–3 weeks during peak summer (March–June) when the AC runs continuously
  • Every 3–4 weeks during monsoon (July–September) when humidity causes filters to accumulate moisture and dust faster
  • Every 4–6 weeks during winter months when AC usage is lighter
  • Immediately if you notice reduced airflow, a musty smell, or the AC not cooling as effectively as usual

What You'll Need

  • A soft brush or dry cloth
  • Lukewarm water
  • Mild liquid soap or dishwash liquid
  • A dry towel or cloth
  • A small torch or phone flashlight (optional but helpful)

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your AC Filter

Step 1 — Turn off the AC completely. Switch off the AC from the remote and then turn off the power at the wall socket or MCB. Never open the unit while it's powered on.

Step 2 — Open the front panel. Most split AC indoor units have a front cover that lifts upward or unclips at the bottom. Gently lift the cover — it should click open without requiring force. Consult your user manual if unsure.

Step 3 — Remove the filters. The filters are the mesh screens sitting just behind the front panel. They slide out easily — usually by lifting a tab or sliding them sideways. There are typically two filters side by side.

Step 4 — Remove loose dust first. Take the filters outside or to a balcony and gently tap them against your palm to dislodge loose dust. You can also use a soft dry brush or the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove the top layer of debris.

Step 5 — Wash with lukewarm water. Rinse the filters under running lukewarm water, spraying from the clean side (back) through to the dirty side (front) to push dust out. For heavily soiled filters, soak in lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap for 10 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft brush.

Step 6 — Rinse thoroughly and dry. Rinse all soap residue completely. Shake off excess water and let the filters air dry completely in shade — never in direct harsh sunlight as this can warp the mesh. Do not use a hair dryer. The filters must be completely dry before reinserting — typically 30–45 minutes in Mumbai's climate.

Step 7 — Inspect the indoor unit. While the filters are drying, use a torch to look inside the unit. If you see heavy dust on the evaporator coils (the metal fins behind where the filters sit), this requires a professional service — coil cleaning is not a DIY task.

Step 8 — Reinsert the filters and close the panel. Slide the dry filters back into position, close the front panel until it clicks, restore power, and turn the AC on. You should notice improved airflow immediately.

Signs Your AC Needs Professional Servicing Beyond Filter Cleaning

  • Water dripping from the indoor unit (blocked drain pipe)
  • Ice forming on the unit or copper pipes
  • Unusual noises — rattling, grinding, or clicking
  • Persistent musty or foul smell even after cleaning the filter
  • The AC runs but the room doesn't cool adequately
